The Short Version
Smallholder farmers face a massive, unfunded data burden to meet strict new EU deforestation laws. Fairtrade’s new Plot Insights tool solves this by offering free digital mapping and instant geolocation validation, ensuring cooperatives stay compliant without losing control of their data.
The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) arrives later this year, imposing strict new data requirements that could become an unfunded burden for smallholder farmers. Starting in December 2026, coffee producers must provide precise farm mapping, GPS locations, and deforestation monitoring to maintain access to the European market. To mitigate these costs, Fairtrade International has unveiled Plot Insights, a free digital tool designed to help certified coffee and cocoa cooperatives manage and validate geolocation data.
Digital Mapping and Risk Analysis
Housed within Fairtrade’s new Unify platform, Plot Insights allows cooperatives to upload plot data and receive instant feedback on quality or visualization errors. The tool integrates deforestation risk analysis provided by the Dutch nature technology company Satelligence, empowering cooperatives to act on alerts or plan education for plots near protected areas. “Farmers are having to adopt new digital tools and map farm plots, which is an expensive burden, to continue to be viable suppliers to the European market,” says Brenda Marina Huerta García, Senior Advisor of Climate & Environment at Fairtrade International. She emphasizes that the platform is built specifically with cooperatives in mind, allowing them to check data quality, share information with customers, and retain full ownership and control of their data.
Streamlining the Supply Chain
Beginning this October, the tool will expand its utility through Fairtrace, a sales transaction system that lets cooperatives share geolocation data directly with exporters and importers. By attaching specific plot data to sales contracts, the information is automatically converted into a format compliant with EU regulations. This allows importers to easily download the necessary documentation for their due diligence statements. Currently, more than 800 certified cooperatives are receiving support through regional networks including Fairtrade Africa, NAPP, and CLAC. According to Fairtrade Africa, 92% of Fairtrade-certified coffee producers in East and Central Africa are already EUDR-ready. These regulatory shifts change how roasters verify sourcing and how transparency reaches the end consumer.
Do you believe digital traceability tools like Plot Insights will become a standard requirement for all specialty coffee importers?
Questions & Answers
What is Fairtrade International's Plot Insights tool?
Plot Insights is a free digital tool designed to help certified coffee and cocoa cooperatives manage and validate geolocation data required for EUDR compliance. Housed within the Unify platform, the tool allows cooperatives to upload plot data and receive instant feedback regarding visualization errors or data quality. It also integrates deforestation risk analysis provided by Satelligence, which helps cooperatives identify risks and plan educational initiatives for farm plots located near protected areas.
How does the EU Deforestation Regulation affect coffee producers?
The EU Deforestation Regulation imposes strict new data requirements that mandate precise farm mapping, GPS locations, and continuous deforestation monitoring for coffee producers. To maintain access to the European market starting in December 2026, producers must provide this detailed information to comply with due diligence standards. These requirements can create an expensive and unfunded burden for smallholder farmers who must adopt new digital tools to remain viable suppliers in the European supply chain.
How can cooperatives use Fairtrace to streamline supply chain compliance?
Cooperatives use Fairtrace to share geolocation data directly with exporters and importers by attaching specific plot data to their sales contracts. This system automatically converts the provided information into a format that is fully compliant with EU regulations. This streamlined process allows importers to easily download the necessary documentation required for their due diligence statements, reducing the administrative burden on both the cooperatives and the entities purchasing the coffee or cocoa.
Why did Fairtrade International develop the Plot Insights platform?
Fairtrade International developed Plot Insights to mitigate the high costs and technical burdens that the EU Deforestation Regulation places on smallholder farmers. The platform is specifically built to help cooperatives check their data quality, share essential information with customers, and retain full ownership and control of their data. By providing these digital tools for free, Fairtrade aims to help cooperatives manage the complex mapping and monitoring tasks necessary to continue supplying the European market.
